How to help your child to love reading
Reluctant Readers
You may be a parent who is frustrated that their child is unwilling to read books, despite your best efforts.
It may be that your child has fallen behind in their reading abilities, perhaps due to the disruption caused by the covid pandemic. They may therefore be reading books that are too challenging for them which can then lead to a loss of interest in reading.
World Book Day
Today’s annual World Book Day was created 25 years ago to signify the celebration of the joy of reading for pleasure.
Indeed, reading for pleasure is one of the key targets of the Primary National Curriculum as it is recognised as a core skill that will widen children’s interest and understanding in all areas of study and of the wider community.

How can parents inspire their child to read?
As parents are important role models, children will be encouraged to read if they see them enjoy reading books.
For young children up to the age of 8, parents can also do much to nurture their child’s love of reading by providing a wide range of picture story books, as well as traditional and factual stories.
Encouraging your child to engage in play activities such as reading to their friends or younger siblings, perhaps creating a ‘reading den’.
Taking your child for a visit to the local Library or bookshop is also a good option as they can choose a selection of books themselves to read and take home with them.
The Literacy Trust recommends that young children read aloud or listen to stories for at least 10 minutes daily, either with friends or family.
For older children, from the age of 9, encouraging them to choose stories from the wide range of classic story books, such as the Puffin or Penguin collection would help to stimulate their enjoyment of reading.
Employing a quality tutor can also support your child’s love of reading a wide range of stories and poems suited to their interests and abilities.
Indeed, with the right support, children can soon rebuild their natural curiosity and love of reading.
