Subject Areas

Key Stage 1 and 2

Whether it’s boosting children’s Maths and English skills in preparation for Key Stage 1 or 2 SATs or helping them to catch up with their classroom work, it’s never too late to turn things around.   With the right support, students can soon restore their confidence in their abilities in these key subjects.

My specialisms in Early Years Learning and Special Educational Needs have made it possible to successfully support hundreds of children with a wide range of learning needs.

Also, I provide specialist tuition to those children who are sitting the 7+, 11+ as well as 13+ school entrance exams.

It is always rewarding to see my students grow in confidence and gain a place in the school of their choice after a course of tuition in entrance test preparation skills.

Key Stage 3, GCSE and IGCSE

The transition from Primary to Secondary school can be challenging for students, especially in the core subjects of Maths and English.  Sometimes, students may need to revisit some of the Key Stage 2 curriculum in order to reach the Key Stage 3 learning targets.

Quite often, students see exams as something to think about in the future.  It can therefore come as a shock to them when they receive their mock exam results in Year 11.  Panic can set in and lead to ‘cramming’ revision into the last few months or weeks before the exams.  The lack of preparation time can cause undue pressure on both the student and their tutor.

In my experience, it is those students who allow enough time for revision who consistently achieve their maximum potential grades.  I have taught many students, including some with severe dyslexia, in the last few months before their exams, who have exceeded their predicted grades.

In these cases, students are often highly motivated which, along with the right support, can significantly increase their chances of success.

Adult Learners

Are you struggling to access a further or higher education course or a job promotion or change of career, due to a lack of confidence in your English or Maths skills?

Or have you accessed a course but finding that you lack confidence in the key academic study skills, essential for success?

You may also be a student who speaks English as a second language, and would like to improve your grade for IGCSEs, IELT tests or Cambridge Business English exams.

How can I help?

I have successfully prepared many adult learners for exams such as the QTS skills tests as well as literacy and numeracy tests for job promotions within large organisations such as the NHS, telephone companies and the Armed Forces.

Also, I support those students who wish to attain Level 1 or 2 in Functional Skills tests.

Following an initial assessment and working with you to identify the key learning targets, I provide learners with a structured learning programme.

Case Studies

One of my recent FE students was educated in Zambia and studying Health and Social Care at a local college.  She began the year with only a grade 1 in Maths and was thrilled when she achieved a grade 4 in her final exam.  This result  secured her a place on her chosen teaching course at Lincoln University.

‘Tina, thank you so very much for all you have done in helping Kelly with her Maths.  We are extremely grateful to you in teaching her as it means she can now fulfil her ambition to become a teacher.’

Gill, grandparent

Ross was seeking a change of career to become a PE teacher.  He had achieved a grade D in Maths at school but this meant he was required to pass a QTS Maths test to secure his place on a teaching course.  He was determined to achieve this goal especially after he gained one point less than the full mark at the first attempt!

He was delighted when he passed the test at the second attempt, which meant he could now commence the teaching course…

Fantastic tutor! Really personable, friendly and understanding of your difficulties.  Has a great subject knowledge too!  Without Tina I wouldn’t have passed my Maths Skills test for my Qualified Teacher Status!

Will my child benefit from having a tutor?

One to one tuition provided by a high quality tutor can be a significant boost for any student who may have fallen behind in their studies. It can also help those students who may be lacking motivation to do their best at school.

Personal tuition can also improve the skills of those who attain the expected learning targets but who can achieve much more.

Is tuition right for my child?

Home tuition is a convenient way of giving your child some extra support with their  studies.

I will work with your child to make a positive impact on their learning.

One to one tuition can help your child understand and gain skills in areas they find challenging.

I can also help them prepare for a test or exam and help boost their confidence.

Am I tied into a contract?

No. Lessons are payable in advance via bank transfer in blocks of six during school term times.

Your child can receive tuition for as long as you wish or until you feel your child has made progress.

If your child is unable to attend a lesson, I will offer to re-arrange it to take place as soon as possible to ensure continuity of learning.

Will I know what’s covered in the lessons?

Yes. I aim to give you feedback at the end of each session and there is also the option for you to receive a written progress report at the end of each school term.

What are the tuition fees?

One hour’s tuition each week is the minimum amount of time for students to gain an educational benefit from receiving a course of tuition.

The hourly fees range from  £48.00 for Primary school pupils to £60.00 for ‘A’ Level tuition.

Face to face or online tuition?

The pandemic has had a significant impact on all our lives which unfortunately has caused learning gaps for many schoolchildren.

I received positive feedback from many parents for the way in which I continued to deliver a top class tuition service during of the pandemic, including online learning.

I am now offering mainly face to face tuition with online tuition as an option.

Online tuition is clearly different to face to face learning but the quality of the service remains the same.

It is worth bearing in mind that the success of any course of tuition depends on both the student’s motivation and the quality of the tuition.

How does online tuition work?

I use the Zoom learning platform which requires a tablet, laptop or PC with audio and video. The system works best if supported via Google Chrome or Apple Safari servers. This is accessed easily by clicking on a link which is emailed to you each week before the lesson.

I use a range of online resources, including the interactive whiteboard that enables screen-sharing. This makes it possible to interact in a way that is similar to the experience of a face-to-face session.

Although it is remote learning, a positive rapport with each student can still be established easily.
