My story
As a school student myself, I was not a natural academic. Although I enjoyed Art and crafts, I struggled with other subjects, especially Maths, and left school with a poor grade. At school I often became distracted during Maths lessons and found it difficult to keep up with the fast pace of learning. Also, I often felt inhibited to ask questions for fear of appearing stupid in front of my classmates. This led to a lack of confidence in my Maths abilities and achieving low scores in tests.
It was only after being offered a conditional place on my chosen teaching course, that I decided to attempt another GCSE Maths course. Fortunately, I found a patient tutor who was happy to answer and explain all of my Maths questions! It was also a challenging time as I attended an evening Maths class while working full time as a Secretary in Manchester. Thankfully, all of the effort was worth it when I achieved a high grade in my Maths exam. Subsequently, I was able to embark on the teaching course and fulfil my ambition to become a teacher.
Outside of tutoring, I am also passionate about wildlife and environmental conservation. As a Wildlife Alliance member, for example, I enjoy helping to rescue injured wild animals wherever I can.

My tuition service is based locally in Beverley and East Yorkshire where I am familiar with the service provided by local schools and colleges. After 30 years of teaching in a variety of education settings, including supply teaching, I decided a few years ago to focus my attention on providing 1:1 tuition.

My own experience of overcoming a lack of confidence in my Maths abilities also means that I can relate to those students who may be struggling with their studies.
The big advantage of 1:1 tuition is that it presents the ideal opportunity to build a positive rapport with each student. It is always rewarding when I see my students beaming as they master and apply new skills!
Of course, there is no magic wand – each student can only progress at their own pace of learning. I can help students to make the learning journey from where they are to where they would like to be. While it may sometimes be necessary to revisit previous learning before making progress, I enable students to build on their strengths.
I have always found that students learn best when they are encouraged to become active, independent learners.
